Martin was the son of Henry J. DeWall and Emma W. Joens. He married Lenora M. Hohensee on June 26, 1949 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. They were the parents of Brenda, Dennis, Sharon, and Garry.
