John Lewis Payton, son of William Payton and Mary Ann Hamilton, was born June 2, 1848 in Delaware Co., Indiana and died May 8, 1926 in Bedford, Taylor Co., Iowa. He married Hattie Townsend Burgess Jan. 12, 1868 in Henry Co., Illinois. He enlisted in Co. K, 7th Illinois Cavalry Regiment Mar. 2, 1865 and was mustered out Nov. 4, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
