James Welch Guthrie was born July 30, 1827 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania and died Sept. 27, 1911 in Orange City, Sioux Co., Iowa. James Welch Guthrie was commissioned an officer in Co. S, 20th Ohio Infantry Regiment on Aug. 21, 1862 and mustered out July 15, 1865. Source: Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio
