June 18, 1899 - Newell Mirror - He enlisted in the Third Wisconsin volunteers, and was in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Mountain (where he was wounded) South Mountain and Antietam. He was then transferred to the regular army, 5th artillery. He was in the siege of Port Hudson and in the Red River campaign. Here he contracted the disease which in the end caused his death. He was mustered out in 1864, almost a physical wreck.

He and Emily had 2 sons.
