Joseph was the son of Conrad Heider and Anna Elizabeth John. He married Mary Reck on 27 Apr 1871 in Fay Grove, Illinois. They were the parents of Mary, Emma, Julius, Lewis, Oscar, Joseph, Laura, and Edward.
