Henry was the son of Timothy Modeland and Ann Lundy. He married Minnie Belle Strine on 5 Nov 1882 in Nebraska City, Otoe, Nebraska. They were the parents of Ethel Emma, Bulah Blanche, Annabelle, Ida, Fred Semore, Raymond H, Lloyd Timothy, Lee William, and Marie. He was a conductor on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.
