John was the son of Andrew W. Hood and Nancy Caroline Tuttle. He married Amanda Sears on 27 Jul 1865 in Dunreith, Indiana. They were the parents of Mary Caroline (1866-1874), Charles Sears (1867-1874), Stella Winters, Lulu (1873-1873), Gurney Tuttle, Nettie (Jeanette Myrtle), Walter Robert, Ethel Lenoir, and Guy Washington.
