This community lost one of its most widely known citizens and life-long residents in the passing away of Fred Smith, on Wednesday
night, November 15. Entering the Akron Hospital August 15th with an injured hip which in a few hours proved to be broken, he
was taken immediately to St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, for the bone to be set and pegged. On September 2nd, he was returned to
the Akron .Hospital and appeared to respond to treatment satisfactorily; but on October 26 he suffered a stroke, followed by another
on November 12th. After this his condition slowly declined and on the following Wednesday- he passed on, having attained the age
of 78 years, 10 months, and 28 days.

Fred Francis Smith was born December 18, 1882, to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith, four miles north of Akron, in Union county, S. D. He
spent most of his life farming, except the past six years he has spent in Akron. He was not married, but had as his companion his violin, which he very much loved to play. He will be remembered by his friends and neighbors as a kind, gentle and quiet man.

Left to mourn his departure are his two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Boden, of Torrance, Calif., and Mrs. Amy Agnes, of Akron; five nephews,
eight nieces and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Andrew, Daniel, Henry, Ude and John, and two sisters Lillian and Mrs. Henry
(Daisy) Peterson.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, Nov. 18, in St. Patrick's Catholic church, Father Jerry Coyle and Father John
Schissel officiating. Cousins of the deceased acting as casket bearers were L. D. Ross, George Ross, James Kluaer, Loren Massey, Belmar Banks and Orel Banks. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery.

Those coming from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Boden and Dal Boden from Beresford, Mrs. B. Olson from Vermillion, Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard Beaubien and Ed Burnight from Sioux City.
