James D. Lewis enlisted in Co. B, 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment, on Aug. 8, 1861 as a Private and was promoted to full Corporal on July 1, 1865. He was mustered out on July 24, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Source: Roster & Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of Rebellion.
