Walter immigrated to the United States in the early 1850s. In 1878 Walter married Johanna P Doyle 1852-1932. Walter is the father of George Burke, Walter I Burke 1878-1933, Mary J Burke 1881-1978, John J Burke 1883-1976, Thomas J Burke 1888-1970 and Catherine Burke Clardy 1893-1979.
