Shirley was the 2nd of three children born to Walter Medric Genereux and Anna Berger in Atlantic, Iowa. Her brothers: Jerome and Stanley.
On 22 Oct 1949, Shirley married Bud Messenger and they had three children: Michael, Mark and Ann that they raised in Eagle Grove.

Howard Thomas "Bud" Messenger was the eldest of three children born to Lee Allen Messenger and Ena Mary Smith in New London, Iowa. His siblings: Lee and Muriel Elaine.
He served in the Navy Air Force in WWII; enlisted: 31 Jul 1941; discharged: 21 Dec 1945. After the war Bud first opened a photography business in Nemaha, Iowa, then moved it to Eagle Grove in 1951. After retiring in 1980 he was a rural mail carrier for six years.
