Charlotte was the 3rd of twelve children born to James Frank Stochl and Anna Clara Moel in Solon, Iowa.
She married Orville Norton Messenger on January 10, 1917 in Solon. They lived briefly in the Iowa towns of Wellman and Downey where Orville found work, but eventually moved to Newton in about 1920.
They had four children. After a difficult homelife and when her youngest children were almost grown, Charlotte divorced her husband.
She lived the rest of her life in Newton, delighting in the achievements of her children and 11 grandchildren.
