Born in Lincoln, Iowa, son of Hugo and Helen Hoeg Nissen. He married Marie C. Gallagher on July 3, 1940 in Grundy Center. He served in the U.S. Army and during WWII was captured and taken as a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge.
