William Leeper was born 11 Aug 1791 in County Donegal, Ireland. He married Sarah Elizabeth Robinson in about 1821 and they had 9 children, the last three were born in America. The family first appeared in Botetourt County, Virginia as early as 1836, then moved to Ohio for a time and were found in Iowa by 1850. Family stories relate that William drown in the swollen Chariton River while taking a team and wagon to another town to fetch furniture.

Despite the date on the tombstone, family researchers say William's son John, born in about 1828 in Ireland, died 6 Jan 1859. At the time of his death he left his wife of eight years, Lucy Ball and three children.
