She represented Iowa as the Educational Commissioner to the Paris Exposition in 1900 where she read a paper entitled "Women in Science". She also founded the Dubuque chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was honorary State Regent for life. Clara was named Honorary Vice President of the General Federation of Women's Club in recognition of her work on behalf of women. She also belonged to the American Economic Association of Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Academy of Political Science in New York. Clara served as the president of Social Union of St. Luke's Methodist Church for many years.
