He married Lydia Eleanor Akes Oct. 1, 1863 in Henry Co., Iowa. He enlisted in Co. K, 4th Iowa Cavalry Nov. 25, 1861 and was mustered out Feb. 25, 1862 at Mount Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa.
