Marguerite Bateman was born on a farm near Central City, Iowa, June 24, 1899. When seven years old she with her family moved to Central City. Here she attended school, completing eleven grades, when on account of illness she was compelled to drop her school work. She had fallen victim to that dread disease, Tuberculosis. Soon after leaving school she was taking by her parents to Boulder, Colorado, in the hope that the change of climate might prove beneficial to her health. For a time she seem to improve but the gain was only temporary and she soon suffered a relapse. From this time on she bravely fought a losing battle, tho all that medicine and loving care could do was done. Never in rugged health she had not the physical strength necessary to conquer the disease that had gripped her.
On October 25, 1921, she was united in marriage to Cecil L. Herzberger at Pueblo, Colorado. Five months later, in March 1922, knowing that recovery was impossible, accompanied by her husband she returned to Central City that she might spend her last days with her family. She was confined to her bed, steadily growing weaker, until thirteen weeks later, in spite of the solicitous care of loved ones, she was claimed by death. She departed this life June 23, 1922, at the age of 22 years, 11 months and 30 days. Had she lived one more day she would have been 23 years old.
Early in life she united with the Christian church of Central City. Five years ago her membership was transferred to the M.E. Church at Boulder, Colorado. In June 1919 her membership was transferred to the M.E. Church of Central City. She was also a member of the O.E.S. of Boulder, Colorado, and the Rebekah Lodge in Central City.
Marguerite was a consistent christian all her life. Her character was above reproach. She was a young lady of high ideals and possessed those qualities of mind and heart that made her life a blessing. All of life is richer because she lived. She was patient and brave in suffering, deeply devoted to her family and friends, and had a cheerful smile for everybody who came her way. Surely such a life is not lived in vain.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Cecil L. Hersberger of Pueblo, Colorado; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Bateman of Central City; five sisters, Mrs. Charles Soesbe, Mrs. Arthur Hutchins, Mrs. Archie Gilchrist, Mrs. David Hyde of Central City and Mrs. Max DuBois of Winthrop, Iowa; three brothers, George and Glenn of Central City and John of Great Divide, Colorado. A baby sister and a baby brother preceded her in death. In addition to her immediate family she leaves a wide circle of relatives and a host of friends.
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their bereavement.
Funeral services were held at the home in Central City, Sunday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m., Rev. B.B. Hanscom officiating. Burial was in Mt. Clark cemetery.
