Served with 89th & 59th Regiment, Company G. Injured at Battle of Altoona Pass in Georgia when the top of a tree fell on him, breaking his right leg above the knee. Elias was the son of Lawrence Umbaugh and Sarah Drake. He was married twice: Melissa Tuel Umbaugh (1849 - 1888) on 24 mar 1868 in Carroll County, IA. they were the parents of William, Laura, Allie, Frank, Ira, and Grover. 2nd Marchina Ella Harriot (1868 - 1932) on 21 AUG 1895. They were the parents of Pearl and Lloyd.
