Susan was the daughter of Judge William Wilson Hamilton (b. 1810 d. 1865) and Olive Dean (b. 1817, d. 1845) of Dubuque. She married George Fairburn on December 5, 1871. They were the parents of George, Edward, Frank, and Ellen.
