Melissa Alma Bates, daughter of John Nelson Bates and Mary J. Morris, was born Dec. 1, 1859 in Taylor Co., Iowa and died June 26, 1895 in Ross Twp., southwest of Bedford, Taylor Co., Iowa. She married James William McCoun April 17, 1878 at Bedford, Taylor Co., Iowa.
