"In Memory of Our Beloved Mother and Sister" Caroline Vyverberg Drowned Sep 13, 1896 Age 49 years Emma Vyverberg Drowned Sep 13, 1896 Age 20 years "Erected and dedicated by Willie, Kryn, Albert, Herbert" These were Emma's brothers.
The two women were drowned trying to cross the bridge at Thompson's Mill on the Little Maquoketa River at 9 am on a Sunday morning. There was two feet of water over the approach to the bridge and the horse stepped off the lower side of the embankment and into the river, dragging the buggy and both women with it. Mrs. Vyverberg's body was found about a mile away later that day, but Emma's body was not recovered until until Friday.
