John was a Civil War veteran and his headstone was put in place for his veteran status.

His first wife, name unknown, died and her burial location is not disclosed. He married Mrs. Nannie Stout in 1886. She is buried in this plot adjacent to John Martin, but her grave is not marked with a headstone.
