Alfred Hurst, born Lincolnshire, England 1841. Served in U.S.Navy on Mississippi River transports during Civil War. Taken prisoner and escaped. Came to Maquoketa in 1871 and founded A.Hurst & Co. Lime Works. Married Sarah Lary in 1873, they had five children: Charles, Eliza, Abram, Alice and William. Died in 1915

Sarah Lary was a daughter of David and Susan Bowman Lary of Rockingham Co., VA. She was sister to Henry W. Lary of Harrison Co., IA and Ben D. Lary of Jackson Co., Iowa.
