Jacob Wiley was born in 1753 and died in Jefferson County, Iowa on September 16, 1846. The birth year is sometimes incorrectly listed as 1763 as a result of a typographical error that got repeated through the years in various sources. Jacob was 93 years old when he died in 1846.

He was buried in a plot 35 rods west of a point on what is now Stockport Road, just south of the Cedar Creek Bridge. The Log Cabin Chapter of the DAR erected a monument by the side of that road to honor Jacob Wiley, in 1929.

Jacob is believed to be the only person buried in Jefferson County who served in the Revolutionary War. Although his ability to verify his service hindered his ability late in life to draw a military pension, he is still believed to have served under Gen. Gates in the Battle of Saratoga, and saw other military action as well.

A white picket fence has been erected by Eagle Scouts.

His wife, Jane Bruce Wiley, may also be buried in this plot but no stone or positive record for her burial has been located to confirm that she is also in this plot. She died in 1846 as well.

Otherwise, Jacob is the only burial in what is locally known as "Pioneer" cemetery in Jefferson County, Iowa.

This headstone photo was taken in April 2004 and is provided by Verda Baird for this memorial.

My grandmother was Vida Rosanna Sears. My Great Grandmother was Priscilla Matilda Wiley Sears, whose father was Eli Wiley and her grandfather was Jacob Wiley.who would be my Great, Great, Grandfather. His wife was Jane Bruce. I understand his grave was found in 1925 the same year I was born.

I inadvertently deleted a Great from my note. Jacob Wiley was my Great Great Great Grandfather.
