INDIANA CHAPEL CEMETERYIndiana Twp.Marion County, IowaUploaded 8/26/2007 by gerhardt_leffler [Email]Indiana Cemetery was a churchyard cemetery until 1961 when the 90 year old Indiana Chapel church building was torn down. The entire building was tipped to the east in a heavy wind on September 26, 1961. The damage was so extensive and because it had been built mostly of native lumber it was considered a total loss. The building had been constructed in 1872 as a Methodist Church with regular services held for about 60 years. The cemetery which is one of the older ones in the township is located in the southwest corner of Section 14 of Indiana Township. To reach the cemetery, drive south from Attica, Iowa on G76 for 1.9 miles, or from the Junction of Highways 5, 14, and 92 in west Knoxville drive south on Highway 14 for 8.8 miles and east on G76 for 6.3 miles. Indiana is in two parts with a ravine separating the original part on the south and the north section across the ravine which is a thicket of brush and trees. There is no plat and many graves or stones do not seem to be in straight rows, therefore the row location might be confusing. The older stones and burials are at the far east end of the larger section. Here many stones have dis-integrated, are broken, are on the ground and parts of the inscriptions were illegible to the recorder due to weathering. There is evidence of many unmarked graves with a cluster of 10 field rocks at the far east end. Many, many hours were required in copying the inscriptions, scraping, chalking, and researching in the courthouse death records, church records, obituaries, and family inquiries in order to get the names and dates as complete and accurate as the eyes and hands were able to do. The copying of the inscriptions and the research was done by Winona Davis; Attica, Iowa, beginning on July 6, 1975.
