Born in Greene County in southwest Pennsylvania in 1843, at age 18 John Banks Allum enlisted in the Civil War at Bellaire, Ohio in April, 1861 and served through mid-July, 1865 in Company A, 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was severely wounded in the right leg in the Battle of Atlanta in August, 1864. The wound, just above his right knee, made it necessary for him to use a wheel chair in later years.

During the winter of 1866-67 “J. B.” migrated to Iowa County, Iowa with his elder brother, Harrison Allum (who also served in the Civil War), and younger brother, Isaac Leonard Allum. (Harrison later settled in South Dakota and Leonard in California.) Upon arriving in Iowa, J. B. was a ferry-boat operator on the Iowa River. He eventually became a barber and, simultaneously, a buyer-seller of real estate. His barber shop, in the red brick building he owned (‘still there), was on the town square in Marengo where, until the mid-1990s, his surname ALLUM remained at the peak.

After J.B. married Rosanna “Rosa” Farley in Marengo in 1868, they had four children: Alta, Lewis Rex, Jennie Ruth and Walter Francis. After Rosa’s death in 1897, J.B. remarried in 1900 to Gertrude May Amrine with whom he had three more children: Wren Orvid, Myrna Charlotte, and Cleone Irene. His third marriage in 1924 was to Mary "Abbie" Tebbetts Hoopes who outlived him by four years. From 1889 until his death in 1927 J. B. had lived in a white-frame, three-story house on Hilton Street (Marengo).

His grave marker at I.O.O.F. Cemetery reads, “Corp. John Banks Allum, Co. A, 43 Ohio Inf.”
