Matilda Meacham, called "Tilda," “Tillie” and “Mattie,” is buried on the FIELDS plot of her younger sister, Sarah “Emma” L. (Meacham) Fields and Emma’s husband, Alexander Teagarden Fields. While her headstone bears the letters "MATILDA," her name, dates of birth and death are engraved on the large FIELDS monument, as follows: “Matilda Meacham, Feb. 13, 1831, Nov. 24, 1888.”

Born in Orange County, Indiana, she migrated west to Iowa in the early 1840s with her parents, Anderson and Lucinda (Wasson) Meacham, and three (to that time) elder siblings. She did not marry. While she did live with, and care for, her elderly father at Solon, Johnson County, Iowa in the early 1880s, she had spent time with her adventurous elder brothers, Alfred and Harvey, in California and Oregon where the brothers built Meacham Station on the stage route into Pendleton, OR.

Harvey J. Meacham (1828-1872) was “killed by a falling tree” at Lee’s Encampment in the Blue Mountains in Oregon and is buried in an undocumented place in that state.

As Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Alfred Benjamin Meacham (1826-1882) was shot several times and partially scalped by Modoc Indians in 1873 in what became known as the MOCOC MASSACRE during which General Canby was killed. Alfred later toured the country on a lecture circuit talking about the war and even wrote books on the topic. He died at his desk in Washington, D. C. where he wrote, published and distributed THE COUNCIL FIRE. He is buried in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D. C.

Matilda, Alfred, Harvey, and Emma mentioned above had four additional siblings named Mary (1823-1856), George (1834-1845), Harriet (1837-1837), and John (1839-1883).
