A.Y. CUPP

Aaron Yambert "A.Y." Cupp (b. Apr. 30, 1838; d. Apr. 23, 1920) m. Diana (Anna) Weimer (b. Apr. 4, 1839; d. Jan. 25, 1925) on Oct. 3, 1861. He was Frederick's 19th child and second-youngest son. A.Y. became a member of the Evangelical Church in 1856 and was licensed to preach in 1871. He moved to Eureka, Iowa in 1864 and farmed there until he moved to north of Carbon, Adams County, Iowa. There, by 1907 he owned the 40 acres due north of the center of Carbon. During the years of his ministry as a circuit preacher he became known as the "Marrying Parson." His circuit including Mt. Zion and Mt. Etna; when at the latter he would preach in the Brethren Church building. He married over 1100 couples and it was said that often he married individuals after having married their parents years before.

Both A.Y. and Anna are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Quincy Township, Adams County, Iowa. Take S.R. 148 4 miles north from Corning, then 183rd Street (S.R. 95) 1 1/2 miles west, then Hickory Avenue 1/2 mile south to 190th Street. 190th St. bisect the cemetery and A.Y's grave is about in the middle of southern section, immediately east of the driveway.
