M. M. Vining Lived Here All His Life
M. M. Vining, a lifelong resident of Woodbine, died Saturday evening at his home, after several week's illness. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon, being conducted by the Rev. S. R. Overholser, who read the following obituary:
Marshall M. vining, the son of Richard and Emma Vining, was born Oct. 2, 1859, and departed this life at his home in Woodbine, Dec. 9, 1933, at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 7 days. He was united in marriage to Addie Swearingen in Woodbine, Feb. 18, 1885. To this union two children were born. Mrs. Vera Robb of Portland, Oregon, and Percival L., of Woodbine. He leaves to mourn his passing the wife and children, one brother, Emmett; one sister Mrs. J. O. Shinn of Woodbine, other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Vining had lived his entire life in this town and community. He had been entrusted with the civil affairs of this city for the past 40 years. He has been a most efficient and trusted public servant, giving of his time and talent to make this city a better place in which to live. He held membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodges of Woodbine. He was held in the highest esteem by these organizations. He was a member of the Pesbyterian church, having joined this organization in 1894.
Woodbine has lost one of its most devout citizens. Mr. Vining will be missed from our streets for you could always find him doing his duty as a peace officer or as street commissioner. He was always ready to pass along the cup of cheer in the time of need, and many a poor fellow has had his dinner at his expense. Yes, we will all miss his cherry "good morning" as we go about our daily tasks. He is gone but not forgotten.
The pall bearers were the city officals and ex-officals with whom Mr. Vining had worked so many years. Charles L. Nicely sang several solos at the service, with Mrs. Elizabeth Weston accompanying him. Burial was made in the Woodbine cemetery.
