Martin was born to Gottfried and Luise (Zander) Kietzman. Martin served in 2 European Wars and took active part in a number of battles. In 1865 her married Amelia “Emilie” Wendland. They had 10 children, of which 2 died in infancy: Emil, Reinhard, Emma, Albert A, Gustav, Emilie, Wilhelmine, Louise, Friedrich Helmuth, & an infant Martin & Emilie immigrated to America in 1875, first to Mahaska county, and then to Keokuk County. Emilie died in 1894. Martin then married Albetina Ponto-Nelson in 1896.
Albertina Pauline Ponto was born in Buchwerder, Kreis Czarnikau, Posen, Germany. She was first married to Johann Nelsen, who died in 1895, and they lived in Elgin, Minnesota. They had 9 children, which 2 died in infancy: Ed, Emma, Anna, Laura, Hermann, Bertha, Ella, Johann Wilhelm, and Mary.
Martin and Albertina married in 1896 and lived near the What Cheer, Iowa.
