Moses Shepherd Barr (1821-1899) Moses S. Barr, born March 4, 1821 in Pickaway Co OH and died April 18, 1899 in the 79th year of his age. He was twice married, first to Melissa Ann Marquess, Nov. 12, 1846. She died July 29, 1860. To them five children were born, and two of them Mrs. Robert H. Carroll(Annette Luella Barr) and Mrs. Judson Cole (Ida Eldora Barr) preceded him to the "better land". He married Sarah A. Sims, March 18, 1865, and to them were born five children, and all are yet living. He located in this Co. in 1856, and moved to the farm home two miles south of New Sharon 1880. He was one of the oldest Odd Fellows in IA having been made a member of that order in 1848, was deeply devoted to its teachings and was universally respected. He was a man of sterling worth of unimpeachable integrity. His funeral occurred at 2 PM Thursday services being held at the home, Rev. I.P. Teter officiating. In accordance with his request he was buried by the Odd Fellows, the organization he dearly loved and always honored. (From the Daily Evening Herald" April 12, 1899.
From The Daily Evening Herald April 18, 1899: Moses S. Barr died of old age at his home near Lacey, at 4:30 o'clock AM Tuesday, April 18, 1899, Mr. M.S. Barrs the funeral will occur from New Sharon Thursday, April 20, interment will be made in the New Sharon Cem. Deceased was well known in the Co. and his death will be generally regretted.
Moses Shepherd Barr was a baker. He lived in Pickaway Co OH 1821-1830 and
Tippecanoe Co., IN 1830-1846. He was the oldest Odd Fellow in IA. (member since 1848)
