Beacon, Mahaska Co. IA Visit 18 Aug. 1982 by Dr. W. L. Baran
Beacon Hill Cemetary: Photo's taken of the grave stones. William N. Silvertorn war marker Co. C 7th IA Inf.
Beacon IA is west of Oskaloosa about 3 miles. It was a big town until the mine played out. I found an old resident who remembered "Old Lady Silverthorn" I could not find the home of William N. and Sophia Silverthorn as shown in the photo's. It was there but the porch has been removed. The lady thought she knew where it was and that a family by the name of Sylvester was living there. The railroad tressel that Dorothy Pearl Silverthorn Baran remembered as a child was gone.
