EXIRA DEPARTMENT
Vernie Esther, infant daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Silas Crane, was born on
October 7, 1895, and died March 21,
1898, at the home of her Grand-mother
Mrs. Jacob Rabson, in the south part
of town. On Friday, the 18th instant,
the little one was taken ill and, despite the skill and care of Doctor Lauritzen,
continued to grow worse until
last Monday when, at four o'clock P.
M. death released the little sufferer from her temple of clay and pain and
suffering, when her free, pure spirit
returned to God the Author of it. The
funeral services were held at the Christian church, on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. C. McQuerry, assisted by Rev. H. L. Wissler, pastor of the Congregational church. The undertaker services were performed by D. E. Shrauger. Four young ladies, the Misses Mary Gault, Iva May, Dollie Gransberry and Maude Brown performed the service of pall bearers, and the remains were laid to rest in the Exira Cemetery.
The air is full of farewells to the dying.
And mournings for the dead;
The heart of Rachel, for her children crying
Will not be comforted.
Where is the loved one who only yesterday
Spoke words of love to us?
Today we call in piteous tones for answer;
But no sound comes back to us.
Where is the darling we loved so fondly?
Who only a few days ago,
Shut her eyes and left our hearts so broken
Oh! shall we ever know?
Yes, love, where thou art gone
Adieus and farewells are words unknown
May we but meet thee on that peaceful
shore!
The parting sound shall pass our lips no more.
