Rufus Putnam Smith, son of John Lowry and Mary Melinda Smith, was born Oct. 14, 1843 near Bellevue, Jackson Co., Iowa and died Sept. 23, 1918 in Sharpsburg, Taylor Co., Iowa. He married Florence Grace May Hastings July 19, 1866 at Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa. She was born Feb. 6, 1847 at Bath, Grafton Co., New Hampshire, daughter of Joseph Hastings and Isabelle Woods, and died Nov. 20, 1919 at Sharpsburg, Taylor Co., Iowa.
