Fred was the son of Carston Holtorf and Margaret Spiess. He married Bertha Bruns on Jan 1, 1901 at Pomeroy, Iowa. They were the parents of Louise, Dorothea, and Elnora. Fred married 2nd Geska Duis on Feb 26, 1907 at Pomeroy, Iowa. They adopted a son, Edward Lindsay.
