Richard was the son of John H and Elzina/Alzina Barnum Bollard. He married Emma Lawrence in Edinboro, Erie County, PA on 24 December 1868. They had ten children: Walter Alvin, Martha Alzina (Mattie), Mary Ella, William Edwin (Will), Frederick John, Roy Eugene, Mae Ann, Grace Alberta, Lawrence Dale, and Richard Gordon.
