Charles was the son of James and Hannah Gilchrist. He married Florence Hinckley on 15 November 1890 in Havelock, Pocahontas, Iowa. They were the parents of James Clark, Charles, John Pierre, Claude, Richard, Wilma Gail, Mary Opal, and Willard.
