Civil War Veteran - Co E 40th New Jersey infantry. He was not yet seventeen when on January 27, 1862 at Trenton, New Jersey, he enlisted in the New Jersey Infantry and was honorably discharged in July 1865.

James married Catharine Fuller on May 28, 1867 in Lancaster co, PA. They were the parents of William, John, James, and Rosanna. He was a civil engineer.
