Luzia was orphaned at the age of 3 and raised by an aunt. She married Jacob Mattes on Feb 13, 1873 in Germany. They were the parents of 10 children: Stephen, Mathias, Elizabeth, Mary, Henry, John, Anna, Helana, Elizabeth, and Lucy.
