Russell was the second son of Andrew and Anna Albertina (Borg) Johnson. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and was KIA on the island of Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Presidential Unit Citations, Asiatic - Pacific Campaign medal, and the American Defense Service medal.
Russell was the brother of Andrew Delver E. Johnson, who was always known as Delver or "Del" Johnson, and who is buried in the Waterville Cemetery.
