Dorathea was one of eight children born to Jurgen F. Schuett and Christina Kistenmacher in Daenishenhagen, Holstein. She married her cousin Ludwig Schmidt in 1865. She was widowed young and bought a house in Davenport after her youngest son Richard received the family farm. Two of her brothers came to the U.S. as well.
