Richard James Underwood enlisted as a Private May 24, 1861 in Co. D, 15th Illinois Infantry Regiment and was mustered out May 24, 1864. He was born in Nov. 1841 in Glens Falls, Warren Co., New York and died July 30, 1905 near Sharpsburg, Taylor Co., Iowa. He married Sarah Helen Marks Dec. 5, 1866 in McHenry Co., Illinois.
