Charles was the son of Levi Whitman and Mary Doty. He married Phoebe Woodward on Sept 15, 1850. They were the parents of 5 children: Anna (Blake), Charles, Fred, and Harry. They raised Ora, a child they adopted. Charles married 2nd Emma J Terrell Griffith on 15 May 1900 in Dickinson county, Iowa.
