Wallace was the son of Peter W Carlson and Mary Elida Durell. He married Mabelle Cartwright on 15 Jun 1905 in Bridgeport, Cheyenne, Nebraska. They were the parents of Laura Mae, Claire, Maxine, Gretchen Ina Elida, Florence Lenore, and Mabelle. Wallace was killed in a car accident near Storm Lake, Iowa.
