Elias was the son of James Doty and Susan Burrell.

Elias and James Doty actually were the sons of Daniel and Betsy Crane. Their brother John lived the next county over, in Cedar county. Elias's widow, Permelia and their son Noah stayed with him and his family until her marriage to Christian Cline
