James was the son of William Bell & Martha L. Shannon. He married Eliza L Irving on 27 Mar 1888 in Hamlin,​ Audubon,​ Iowa. James was a painter and then a farmer. Joseph Henry, who is also buried in this cemetery, is James's brother.
