Benjamin Piper was born Nov. 17, 1842 in Franklin Co., Pennsylvania and died Nov. 15, 1929 in Sharpsburg, Taylor Co., Iowa. He enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 45th Illinois Volunteer Regiment Dec. 24, 1861, was promoted to Full Sergeant and mustered out July 12, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Source: Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men
