William was the 6th of 12 children born to William M. Pray and Letitia Bennett. His siblings: John H, Mary, George W, Wallace E, Francis I and Emerson G. After his death, his parents had five more children: Lewis D, Cora, Ida, Sarah, Roy and Rosey.

He is buried in a row with family members that includes his mother and father, two sisters (Mary and Rosey), a cousin and his grandfather.
