Charley was born in Wayne Co., Iowa, the 2nd of three children of James W. Morris and America Jane Bercaw. His siblings: Lydia Lenora and Roy R.

At Corydon, Iowa, on 22 Aug 1894, Charley married Myrtle Alice George, daughter of Richard M. George and Emma Elizabeth Hancock. They had four children: Hazel, Stewart, Pearl and George (see Myrtle's bio on this site for details). During their marriage the couple lived in Union, Wright and Bethlehem townships in Wayne County. Myrtle died 2 Apr 1901 and seven years later, on 31 Jul 1908, Charley's 12-year-old son, Stewart died.

On 2 May 1906, Charley married Ora Ellis, daughter of Oliver Perry Ellis and Hannah E. Burton. In 1910, their first child, Fay, was born. Over the next 12 years they had five more children: Ora, Dottie, Cecil, Opal May and Jay Perry.

When he was first married, he worked as a day laborer, but eventually he learned the skills to work as a carpenter and was self-employed in that vocation.

He is buried in a row with his son, Stewart and his first wife Myrtle George on one side and his 2nd wife, Ora on the other.
