Russell Otto Seaman

1917 - Dec. 7, 1941

Devotion A 165 - space 1

Note:
Russell Otto Seaman was aboard the USS Arizona when Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. After that, his mother received a message from the War Department that Seaman was missing. On February 4, 1942, Mrs. Seaman received another message that Russell Otto Seaman was declared lost in action.

It isn't entirely clear if his body was ever physically recovered, but in March 1942 services were held at the Fairfield High School auditorium to pay tribute to his memory. The headstone that is shown on this entry states the he was "Killed at Pearl Harbor".

The Fairfield Daily Ledger stories in March 1942 only refer to the memorial services being held in his memory; nothing was explicitly stated that his body was laid to rest at Memorial Lawn cemetery, however, which would have likely been mentioned in the final story about his memorial service if that was the case.

Russell's mother, Lillian May Johnson Seaman/Spratt (1895-1979) is buried in this same plot.

Admin. note: Russell's name appears on the Tablets of the Missing at the 'Punchbowl' (Honolulu Memorial Cemetery) in Honolulu, Hawaii, as Missing In Action or Buried At Sea. He was a Fireman First Class in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. His date of death is noted there as 7 December 1941. /Admin.
